Betfair Sprint Cup 2026: preview and leading contenders
With no clear favourite and rain in the forecast, Haydock’s Group 1 looks wide open three days out.
Saturday’s Betfair Sprint Cup goes off at 15:35 over Haydock’s straight six furlongs. Three days out, there is no single horse the market has settled on.
An open field, and a weather question
The leading group all want fast ground: Comanche Brave, Coppull, Satono Reve, Division, Big Mojo and Lake Forest. Rain is forecast for the north west before Saturday, and the connections of both Comanche Brave and Coppull have already said their horses need it quick. Some of this group may not even take their place if the ground turns.
The in-form raider
Coppull, trained by Clive Cox for owner-breeder David Armstrong and ridden by Hector Crouch, arrives with the strongest recent form in the field. The three-year-old showed real class in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup and July Cup this season. He then backed it up with victory in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on 15 August.
The course specialist
Outside that fast-ground group sits another leading contender with a different profile. Kind of Blue has made a habit of running well here. James Fanshawe’s runner was second in the 2024 Sprint Cup, beaten a head, and second again in 2025, beaten a length and a quarter. Fanshawe has confirmed his intention to run again, and particularly fancies his chances if the ground softens.
Who isn’t running
One notable absentee is Lazzat. Last year’s QEII Jubilee Stakes winner has been out since May. He was ruled out for the season after returning sore from his win in the Prix du Palais-Royal at Longchamp.
Wathnan’s racing adviser Richard Brown said at the time the plan was a return later in the campaign if all went well. No comeback has since been confirmed, and Saturday’s field looks set to go on without him.
What to watch before Saturday
The final field, weights and stalls are confirmed at declarations on Thursday evening. With the ground still uncertain and no standout name at the top of the market, this looks like one of the more open runnings of the Sprint Cup in recent years.
