Cambridgeshire Handicap trends: notable winners and a decade of data

One pattern has dominated the Cambridgeshire since 2016, and it starts with the stall number.

The Cambridgeshire Handicap has been run on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile since 1839. That year, Lanercost, ridden by William Noble, took the very first renewal, part of the Autumn Double’s origin story. Nearly two centuries later, the race still produces one of the biggest fields in British racing.

The dominant trend: a strong high-draw bias

Between 2016 and 2023, every single winner came from stall 21 or higher. That is an unusually consistent pattern for a race that regularly fills to capacity. With fields running as large as 35, low-drawn runners have had a tough watch year after year.

The streak has broken twice in a row since. Liberty Lane won from stall 4 in 2024, and Boiling Point followed from stall 6 in 2025. Two low-drawn winners back to back is a real shift, not a one-off blip. Our beginner’s guide to big-field handicaps explains why the draw matters so much here in the first place.

Notable winners

John Gosden holds the record among modern trainers, with five wins in the race: Halling (1994), Pipedreamer (2007), Tazeez (2008), Wissahickon (2018) and Lord North (2019).

Seven horses have won the Cambridgeshire twice. They are Hackler’s Pride (1903, 1904), Christmas Daisy (1909, 1910), Sterope (1948, 1949), Prince de Galles (1969, 1970), Baronet (1978, 1980), Rambo’s Hall (1989, 1992) and Bronze Angel (2012, 2014). No horse has won it three times.

2026’s winner, Pierre Royal, gave Ireland its first success in the race this century.

What’s on offer

This year’s race carried a prize fund of £200,000, with £103,080 going to the winner. That is a significant sum for a handicap. It is part of what keeps entries so competitive year after year.
