Park Hill Stakes 2026: preview

Doncaster’s fillies’ St Leger tests the same stamina question the big race asks a day later.

Friday’s card at Doncaster carries its own piece of Classic-distance history. The Park Hill Stakes, a Group 2 for three-year-old fillies, is run over the exact same mile and six that the St Leger itself covers a day later.

A race with history behind it

First run in 1839, the race takes its name from Park Hill, the estate that belonged to Anthony St Leger, founder of the St Leger Stakes itself. It has a colourful past too. Blink Bonny’s win in 1857 sparked crowd unrest, after spectators felt she had been unfairly denied victory in the St Leger the day before.

This year’s field

The final list of fillies is confirmed at declarations closer to the meeting. Check the official racecard before the race for the confirmed line-up and jockey bookings.

History offers a useful guide to the type: recent winners have often arrived via Goodwood’s Lillie Langtry Stakes or York’s Galtres Stakes. The field typically draws fillies stepping up in trip after finishing short in the Oaks, the Ribblesdale or the Yorkshire Oaks.

What it tells us about Saturday

Because the distance matches the St Leger exactly, how Friday’s fillies handle the trip is often read as an early sign of how the ground and pace will play a day later. It’s a useful reference point heading into our St Leger preview and best bets.
