And there was Economics, whose return had everyone watching. Every name on that list carried form, weight, and intention. 

Calandagan stepped into the same race as a King George winner, trained by Francis Graffard, who was having a standout year. He confirmed his quality with a commanding victory in the Champion Stakes, ridden by Mickael Barzalona and representing the Aga Khan Studs. 

This Was the Year That Took a Clean Line in the Turf

All the factors led to a single fact. The 2025 Champions Day program gathered a team of racers that fulfilled every criterion of power. Having such a large number of the best horses in the world was a rare occurrence. The day’s organisation reached a stage where it no longer relied on the names of one or two headliners to support the rest.

The support acts were strong enough to lead any other festival. Among them, Calandagan stood out, delivering a dominant victory in the Champion Stakes and confirming his place at the top of the turf.

The key contests resembled title fights. What was once a fitting culmination of the British flat season now stood as a stage capable of topping the entire racing calendar. Ascot delivered a card in which each minute mattered. This was the team that set a new standard.
