Devilment made his Flat speed tell after getting up in the dying strides to claim victory in the Masterson Holdings Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Having finished fourth in the Triumph Hurdle on his last visit to the track, the 3-1 shot went three places better when flying up the hill to make it three wins from six starts over hurdles.
Tea In Transvaal, seeking a five-timer, cut out much of the early running, before being passed by Karezak on the turn for home.
Although a host of challengers sat within striking distance, it looked as though the Alan King-trained runner had pulled out enough for victory after continuing to find plenty for pressure.
However, he was to be denied as Aidan Coleman produced the John Ferguson-trained Devilment with a perfectly-timed challenge to capture the two-mile prize by three-quarters of a length.
Ferguson said: "I am delighted and he has done it well as it was his first start since Aintree, but he has come here and done the job.
"We will just have to see where to go next but the Greatwood Hurdle is a possibility, although he would have lots of possibilities.
"He would have to improve again to be a Champion Hurdle horse, but there is no reason he won't in time as he is only four and has got bags of time."
