Second to Duffle Coat at the last meeting here, Adagio went smoothly through the race and was still on the bridle when jumping to the front at the last.

Historic Heart did try to mount a challenge up the hill but was readily brushed aside, the winner going on to score by four-and-three-quarter lengths.

Coral halved Adagio in price to 16/1 for the JCB Triumph Hurdle itself back here in March.

"He was in at Doncaster as well but we decided to come here," David Pipe, the winning trainer said. "We rode him a bit differently today, he probably got to the front too soon last time and was outstayed by Duffle Coat.

"He was professional, jumped well and did it nicely. Hopefully he's progressing with each run. He'll have an entry in the Triumph and the Fred Winter and we'll see what happens in the meantime."
