Jet Setting defeats Minding by a head in the Irish 1,000 Guineas

Minding sustained a minor head injury when she suffered a shock defeat to bargain-buy Jet Setting.

Having dominated her rivals on the Rowley Mile three weeks ago, Minding was originally set to head straight for next month's Investec Oaks at Epsom.

However, the withdrawal of stablemate Ballydoyle from the Curragh Classic led to a late change of plan and Minding was the 4-11 favourite to complete the Guineas double.

All appeared to be going to plan for much of the one-mile journey, with Pretty Perfect and Jet Setting - only ninth at Newmarket - giving the market leader a nice lead into the straight.

However, Jet Setting found another gear passing the four-furlong marker and although Minding responded to set up a grandstand finish, Adrian Keatley's filly would not be denied and clung on by a head.

Winning jockey Shane Foley said of the former Richard Hannon inmate: "It's a dream come true.

"She's a tough little filly and the ground came right for her - she ran a blinder at Newmarket but it was too fast for her.

"Soft ground and a stiff mile was ideal for her."

The winner, who was supplemented for the race on Monday at a cost of 30,000 euro, holds an entry in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, but Keatley is keen to assess conditions in Berkshire before making a firm commitment.

He said: "It's a dream, really, but miracles happen. She was a cheap purchase at £12,000 last October.

"We were delighted when the rain came as it allowed her to do the business.

"I was just hoping at the finish that she stayed where she was.

"I'm delighted for the owners and everyone in the yard.

"Hopefully this will help us get bigger, better and more competitive so we don't have to keep going to Ayr every Monday!

"I don't know what's next. I didn't look beyond this. She's entered in Ascot but whether she goes or not I don't know.

"When the rain was forecast we said we'd have a go here and, luckily enough for the lads, it worked out as it was a big call to supplement her again."

RaceBets eased Minding to evens from 4-7 for the Oaks on Friday week but O'Brien is hopeful she will recover in time to make the trip to Epsom.

He said: "She hit her head on the stalls before they opened and burst her sinus.

"Ryan (Moore) said she anticipated it (the start) before the gates opened.

"Obviously we're disappointed she got beat, and obviously it (hitting her head) wasn't an advantage, but she ran well. The poor thing will have a headache, anyway.

"We won't take anything away from the other filly, though. It's good for Adrian. The winner is a good filly and was very well trained by Adrian. She handles soft ground well.

"We'll see how she is after that. She had two bits of work to do this week. After Ballydoyle came out the plan was to let her go here and then kick on."
