Constitution River never saw a rival, blazing a trail from the front to stretch Aidan O’Brien’s extraordinary grip on the race.
The roll of honour is Ballydoyle-heavy: Giant’s Causeway in 1999, Hawk Wing in 2001, Gleneagles in 2014, Henri Matisse only last year. Now Constitution River joins them, sent off a strong 5-6 favourite under Wayne Lordan.
Second on debut at Newmarket, ruthless at Galway, the Wootton Bassettcolt had learnt plenty. Straight to the lead at the Curragh, Lordan let him roll, then pressed the accelerator two furlongs from home. The response was immediate, rivals left flat-footed.
Geryon, a course-and-distance winner, tried to give chase but was brushed aside; at the line Constitution River was two lengths clear, brimming with authority.
O’Brien was full of praise:
“He’s a lovely, straightforward horse. He’d a lovely run first time and was still very green when he won the next day.
“Wayne gave him a lovely ride, and he quickened well.”
The bookmakers reacted, Paddy Power trimming him to 14-1 for next year’s 2000 Guineas. And for O’Brien, the next step looks obvious:
“Obviously you have to look at the National Stakes with him, and he’s going to be very happy going up in trip whenever that time comes.”
