Oisin Murphy’s golden run on Town Moor just keeps on rolling—this time Marvelman was the willing partner, surging clear to dominate in style.

Murphy, fresh from four Friday winners and already on the scoresheet in Saturday’s opener, was brimming with confidence on Andrew Balding’s 13-2 contender. Settled in behind the pace through the early exchanges, Marvelman cruised into contention before gliding past long-time leader Quinault with two furlongs left. From there, he simply stretched away, bounding three and three-quarter lengths clear in this Group Two test, with King’s Gamble finishing second and Audience third.

In contrast, Shadow Of Light—the Group One-winning 5-4 favourite—never landed a blow, pulling hard in the early going and offering little when the tempo lifted.

Balding was full of praise for his revitalised charge: “He’s really found his spark of late and was impressive today.

“He’s generally very consistent and never disappoints, apart from when we really fancied him in the Jersey at Royal Ascot – his owners came over from Australia to watch him that day, too!

“The owners have been very patient and it’s paid off today.

“He’s run some good races on fast ground, but he’s handled that bit of cut very well today.”

Looking ahead, Balding outlined the next target: “We’ll probably head to the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket with a penalty.”

Murphy, tightening his grip on the champion jockey crown, reflected on the ride and the horse’s recent upswing: “His work has gone to a new level in recent weeks since Newbury and we thought he’d be fine on that ground.

“We got a good tow into it and he hit the line well.

“We went a nice even pace, not flat to the boards like Quinault sometimes can do, as this ground can be tiring and I realised early it might take a bit of getting, but he powered clear for pressure.”
