Urban Lion denies Rogue Diplomat by the finest of margins in the @WilliamHill Lincoln! 🏆@DoncasterRaces | @ChannonRacing pic.twitter.com/wbcPxdwroK
The Lincoln, as it so often does, unfolded not in a sweeping narrative but in a series of small, decisive moments, none more telling than the final stride. There, on the line at Doncaster, Urban Lion and Rogue Diplomat were inseparable to the eye, locked together in a duel that had developed almost imperceptibly through the closing stages before resolving itself in the narrowest of margins.
For Jack Channon, it was a moment that completed a notable double on the day, Mezcala having earlier landed the Spring Mile, but it was Urban Lion who provided the defining image. Under Eddie Greatrex, he found not so much a change of gear as a willingness to keep finding, edging ahead where it mattered most to deny a game Rogue Diplomat. Greatrex, still processing the finish, admitted: “I thought I just got beat, but what an effort from this lad and everyone at West Ilsley who is involved with him. I’m delighted for Jack and chuffed for the horse.
“I didn’t want to be as handy as I was if I’m honest but we pinged the gates and Sam (James on Botanical) has gone a good gallop in front and always had a target on his back. He just took me there and I let him. The ground is probably sticky enough for my horse and I’m so pleased he stuck at it.
“This is why we get up everyday. I’m probably on the cold list after the last couple of weeks so this is great.” Channon, whose yard has begun the season with quiet purpose, echoed that sense of satisfaction: “We joked about a month ago that we had two we fancied for both races and this is a good horse and Eddie has given him a brilliant ride. I thought we were beaten if I’m honest so I’m chuffed. He was unlucky in the Hunt Cup last year so that’s brilliant.
“It’s a great start to the new year, everyone at West Ilsley has done an unbelievable job.” Behind the front two, the race offered its usual blend of promise and frustration. Botanical, who had set the pace, ensured a true test but paid for those early exertions late on, while La Botte, the pre-race focus of much attention, never quite landed a telling blow.
Eternal Force, expected to build on his progressive profile, shaped respectably without quite threatening to win, and Shout similarly found himself just short of the required lift when it mattered.
Rogue Diplomat, for his part, lost little in defeat. His effort confirmed both his stamina for the mile and his standing among the better handicappers, even if the final verdict went against him. And so the season begins with a familiar lesson. In races such as this, it is rarely about dominance, more often about resilience — the ability to sustain effort when others falter, and, as Urban Lion demonstrated, to have the head down at precisely the right moment.
