A plan well-laid and even better executed. Haiti Couleurs, so deftly nurtured through his novice chase campaign by the ever-patient Rebecca Curtis, had Cheltenham glory in his sights from early doors — and duly delivered in the National Hunt Chase come March.
With that mission accomplished, it was across the water for the Easter highlight on Irish soil — and Curtis was quietly confident she had her eight-year-old right where she wanted him. She wasn’t wrong.
Sent forward by Sean Bowen, Haiti Couleurs was always prominent — fluent and efficient over his fences, travelling with Bushmans Pass for company through the early exchanges. But as they swung for home, the early pressure began to tell. Bushmans Pass was the first to crack, but the pursuers were queuing up in behind.
Dunboyne loomed large, Quai De Bourbon angled out for a run — the 11/2 favourite travelling sweetly but undone by a stuttering leap when it mattered most. He began to backpedal just as the reliable old boy Any Second Now picked up the bridle.
Twelve months ago, it was second place for Ted Walsh’s gallant veteran — and once again he chased bravely, but Haiti Couleurs had flown. Three and a quarter lengths the verdict at the line. Quai De Bourbon clung on for third, Dunboyne was next, and Johnnywho rounded out the five.
A lovely performance, and a richly deserved one — returned at 13/2, Haiti Couleurs continues to reward the faith.
