Iberico Lord produced a striking performance, sweeping past his rivals in the home straight to give Nicky Henderson a fifth success in this valuable contest.
Henderson’s sole representative in a field of 15, the 22-1 chance was partnered by James Bowen and, for much of the race, was not ideally positioned. However, as they turned for home, Bowen angled wide, found a clear path and Iberico Lord responded generously, surging past the pack to score decisively by four and a half lengths from Double Powerful.
It was a familiar success for Bowen, who had previously lifted the Lanzarote aboard William Henry in 2018, and he reflected on another big handicap victory in the famous green and gold colours.
“William Henry doesn’t feel that long ago, but I must be getting old now. I love riding in these colours (JP McManus) when I can and it’s great to ride a winner in them.
“I spoke to the boss and we agreed on the plan and we said we would see what happened and he’s done it well. I think the trip definitely helped and the whole complexion of the race suited him.
“He’s dropped down to a nice weight as well which probably told. It’s the first time I’ve ridden him for a long time, but he felt good today anyway.”
For McManus, Iberico Lord has now landed another of the season’s major handicap hurdles, adding this victory to his Greatwood and Betfair Hurdle triumphs from the 2023-24 campaign, a season that even saw him take his chance in the Champion Hurdle.
McManus’ racing manager Sir Anthony McCoy was delighted to see the eight-year-old back in top form.
“It is nice that he won and a bit of a surprise. Whether this trip has helped him, I’m not sure, but he’s a horse who has won some nice races like the Greatwood and Betfair a few years ago.
“He’s not done too bad has he? He also ran in a Champion Hurdle and is a good little horse, you wouldn’t mind a few more like him.
“I’m not sure on a plan, but I imagine we’ll just keep going in races like this and see how we get on.”
In a typically competitive renewal of the Lanzarote, Iberico Lord proved strongest when it mattered, delivering a sweeping, wide-ranging finish that lit up the Kempton straight and reaffirmed his place among the leading handicap hurdlers of the season.
