Favori De Champdou provided one of the shocks of the meeting as Sam Ewing produced a perfectly judged ride to land the win at odds of 66-1, capping a memorable day for his connections.
Settled quietly through the early stages, Favori De Champdou crept into contention as the race developed, travelling strongly while others began to feel the pinch. Ewing’s patience paid dividends turning for home, where the outsider moved ominously well on the heels of the leaders.
Once asked to stretch after the final fence, Favori De Champdou found generously, quickly asserting and pulling four and a half lengths clear of Search For Glory on the run-in. It was a decisive finish to a fiercely competitive handicap and a performance that belied his starting price.
The victory underlined Ewing’s growing reputation for delivering when it matters most, combining composure and confidence to devastating effect in one of the festival’s most valuable prizes.
Fresh from recording six winners across the Friday meetings, this win helped Gordon Elliott saddle a remarkable 22,511/1 four-timer at Leopardstown today.
