The 150th running over the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Park, the $3m prize money and the £120,000 gold Cup goes to France this year as Americain was given a beautiful ride around the outside to hit the front with 100 yards to go.

Gerald Mosse has been likening this horse to Bentley Motor car. When he won the Geelong Cup he jumped off and stated that he would win this race as he had more gears. Alain De Royer-Dupre was making his first visit to Australia for the race.

As they came into the finishing straight they formed a line across the track, Descarado in the middle, So You Think cruising on the outside and Mayluckyday tracking him. With Harris Tweed playing his part.

At the 250 pole, So You Think, the shortest priced favourite for this race for many many years looked for all the world like the winner, hitting the front and seemingly cruising. Of the four million pounds traded on the race, half of it was on the favourite, So You Think. But Gerald Mosse had other ideas. He was super confident his charge had the finishing kick to see off Bart Cummings unbeaten favourite and so it transpired. Those extra gears were in evidence as Americain hit the front at the 100 and simply went away in stunning style. The Geelong Cup is such an important form guide for this race for European entries and so it proved once again.

Malukyday ran on to snatch second place after a little bumping and kept So You Think to a third place finish. As big as evens earlier in the day to get that place, plenty of punters had latched onto that piece of value and covered win bets.

Americain returned 19.5 on Betfair Sp

The $3million winners purse, is split, 85% winning owner, 10% trainer and 5% for the jockey.

After the race Gerald Mosse said “Its good to participate” he added that he never gets nervous, and kept him wide to stay out of trouble knowing he was on a good horse. “At 200 I knew I was perfect and my timing was perfect” He ran away from the field in the final 100 yards and made this a memorable “race that stopped a nation”!!
