The Northumberland Plate remains one of the great staying handicaps of the British Flat season, and the 2026 renewal at Newcastle promises another fiercely competitive contest over the marathon two-mile trip. Run on the sweeping all-weather circuit, the race combines stamina, tactical awareness and handicap expertise, often producing a finish every bit as dramatic as its reputation suggests.

Heading the early market is Klassleader, whose profile has been transformed by an impressive success in the Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Handicap at York. William Haggas’ progressive son of Lope De Vega advertised both stamina and class in that victory and has quickly emerged as one of the most interesting staying handicappers in training.

The Lope De Vega colt justified 15-8 favouritism under Tom Marquand when running out a comfortable two and three-quarter length winner which guarantees him a run in the big handicap at the course later this year.

Haggas will delight in getting off the mark in just the second race of the Dante meeting with a live Ebor contender, for which he is currently a 10-1 chance with sponsors Sky Bet.

This meeting makes for a common hunting ground for locally-born Haggas and Klassleader arrived off the back of a good handicap debut when second at Haydock in September and reversed the form with the winner of that race, Sing Us A Song. Though dropping back in distance, his trainer holds no doubts about his stamina.

“He will stay the Ebor trip and he is qualified now,” said Haggas.

“You would be a brave man not to run him again beforehand, but I won’t. It’s probably the sensible thing to do because he’s won off 90, if he goes up 5lb to 95, he wouldn’t get in the Ebor off 95 normally but he is guaranteed a run.

“It’s very nice ground and if you listen down by the rail as they go past it’s not squelchy, it is firm with a bit of water on the top. Once the rain gets chance to get in, it will be lovely ground.

“Everyone wants to win here and when you’re a Yorkshire-born trainer it is nice to win here.”

While the Ebor may be the long-term objective, Klassleader’s proven stamina and progressive profile make him an obvious candidate for major staying handicaps along the way, including Newcastle’s famous Plate.

Sharing favouritism in the current market is Valiancy, another progressive stayer whose profile suggests there could be further improvement to come over extreme distances. The Northumberland Plate often rewards horses on an upward curve, and he fits that mould perfectly.

Opportunity heads the next wave of challengers and appeals as a horse capable of thriving in a strongly-run two-mile handicap, while Beylerbeyi brings proven staying form and consistency that could prove invaluable in a race where experience often counts for plenty.

Shrimp Shady, Ride The Thunder, Square Necker, Finalise, Berkshire Sundance and Circus Of Rome all feature prominently in the betting and underline the depth typically associated with this race. Each possesses enough form to suggest they could become serious contenders if conditions and handicapping fall favourably.

Tactically, the Northumberland Plate is unlike most staying contests. Newcastle’s all-weather surface generally ensures an honest gallop, but the long trip means patience remains crucial. Riders who commit too early can find themselves vulnerable in the closing stages, while those held up too far off the pace often struggle to make up ground.
