Precise lived up to her odds-on tag with a commanding display.  Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Christophe Soumillon, the star two-year-old made every stride count.  From the stalls she settled at the back of the pack, content to let her Ballydoyle stablemates Composing and Sugar Island set the early pace.  Soumillon bided his time at the rear, allowing Precise to gather herself as the field sprinted toward the stands side.

As the race unfolded down the straight, Precise began to wind up through the final half-mile.  Tucked in behind the leaders, she was released with two furlongs to run and instantly the result was never in doubt.  With a smooth, effortless burst of speed, the filly surged from behind the tiring pacesetters.  By the time she straightened for home, Soumillon had her surfing up the outside, accelerating past the field in a blur of motion.  She hit the front inside the last furlong, and from there readily put daylight between herself and the rest.

When the dust settled, Precise was a comfortable three-and-a-quarter lengths clear at the finish.  Charlie Johnston’s 40-1 outsider Venetian Lace chased her home in second, but never looked capable of catching the hot favourite.  It was an emphatic win – a fitting reward for a filly who had already shown top-class form in the Moyglare Stud Stakes.  The Coolmore-owned bay crossed the line in hand, her ease of victory underlining her class and speed.

In the aftermath, attention quickly turned to the future.  Odds compilers at Coral immediately cut Precise into 5-2 favouritism for next year’s 1,000 Guineas, making her the clear early favourite for the Newmarket Classic.  Stable companions Diamond Necklace (the Prix Marcel Boussac winner) and True Love (Cheveley Park Stakes winner) also feature in the Guineas market at around 8-1, but Sunday’s exertions confirmed that it is Precise who reigns at the top of her generation for now.

In the interview area Soumillon paid tribute to the filly’s quality.  He noted that Precise had “cruised the whole way” once she found her feet, and suggested that even stepping up in trip to a mile would pose no problem for her.  O’Brien, enjoying his seventh Fillies’ Mile victory, will now almost certainly aim this exciting filly at the British Classics in the spring.  Given the fireworks she provided today, her connections will be dreaming of Classic glory to come.
