Big Mojo is being readied for a return to action here, with Mick Appleby hopeful conditions will allow his Group One-winning sprinter to begin his campaign on the Knavesmire.
The four-year-old enjoyed a breakout season last term, emerging as one of the leading sprint performers of his generation. After going down by only a neck in the July Cup, he gained deserved compensation with a top-level success in the Sprint Cup at Haydock.
Connections are now looking forward to another campaign at the highest level, although underfoot conditions are likely to play a significant role in determining his early-season targets.
“The plan is to start him off at York as long as the ground is fine for him,” said Appleby.
“If I could pick it now I’d like good to firm for him but he probably wouldn’t run if there was any soft in the description.
“He’s going to have a penalty but unfortunately that is the price you pay for winning a Group One.
“As for where we go for the rest of the season trip-wise whether to stay at six or five we’ll just see. The owner is keen to have another go over five somewhere.
“It’s brilliant that he’s stayed in training, though. To have him in the yard is great.”
With proven top-class form already on his record and the prospect of further development as an older sprinter, Big Mojo looks set to remain a major force in the division, provided conditions come in his favour.
