Sander Camillo disappoints in Nell Gwyn
19/04/07

Sander Camillo was replaced as favourite for the Stan James 1000 Guineas after suffering defeat by a neck to Scarlet Runner in the Group 3 Shadwell Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket.

Irish hope Finsceal Beo is the new 6-4 favourite with Coral, while Sander Camillo is out to 5-1 having previously headed the market alongside her rival at 5-2.

The sponsors were even less impressed and pushed Jeremy Noseda's filly out to 11-2. Totesport quote Scarlet Runner at as big as 20-1.

Noseda was reasonably upbeat about his daughter of Dixie Union despite her reverse as the 4-7 favourite on what was her first start since winning the Cherry Hinton Stakes last July.

The locally-based trainer said: "She's not won, but she will be here on Guineas day and I'm not going to panic, this was only a prep.

"I did expect more on the day, but I believe there is still improvement to come and she will be spot on for the big day in two weeks' time.

"She has not run for nine months so I thought I would bring her here for a chance and while what has happened is not ideal, it was just a prep."

Scarlet Runner (15-2) was always prominent on the far rail and stayed on well for Kerrin McEvoy in the closing stages, with the first two home pulling half a length clear of Tim Pitt's Blue Rocket.

Winning trainer John Dunlop said: "That was very pleasing. She likes to be in front so the draw did a lot to help her. She's got the seven furlongs well and none of us know about another furlong, but I imagine she would get it.

"Coming here I would have been pleased with third or fourth, but she's come here and done her stuff so we will have to go to the Guineas now. She's a big, strong filly who has progressed and she does enjoy fast ground."

The daughter of Mr Greeley, trained by Jim Bolger in Ireland, was mightily impressive when recording a five-length success in the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac Royal Barriere de Deauville at Longchamp, and ended her two-year-old campaign with a decisive victory in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket on October 14, defeating Rahiyah by three lengths.
