Trumpet Major's Odds Cut for Guineas Following Craven Victory
20/04/12

Having landed the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes on Wednesday, the Richard Hannon team made it Guineas trial a double on Thursday by landing the Group Three Craven Stakes with the very impressive Trumpet Major.

MansionBet were the most impressed of the bookies, slashing the son of Arakan's odds for the Colt's opening to 6/1 while Bet 365 saw the 33/1 before the race shorten to 10/1 and later 8/1 following the victory. Ladbrokes are seemingly happy to take him on at this stage and offer best price around of 12/1.

The quality of the race was diluted somewhat by the withdrawal of the favourite, Brian Meehan trained Most Improved, who was third in the Dewhurst Stakes. However, given the performance from Trumpet Major there is no certainty that Most Improved would have confirmed that half length Dewhurst superiority but that form could be a good sign for the chances of last year's Dewhurst winner, Parish Hall, ahead of the Jim Bolger trained runner's seasonal debut in the Group Three, Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial, on Sunday.

Godolphin’s Mighty Ambition was sent off the 7/2 favourite for the Craven and had been expected to run a big race but simply never got into the picture suggesting that he needed the run and should be one to watch next time after finishing fifth. Charlie Hills had also expected a big performance from his Forgotten Hero but he pulled quite noticeably at the start and never really got into the race whilst the third horse home was the John Gosden trained, Eastern Sun, who ran down the centre of the course for much of the race and although he ran well, he was no match for the winner or Crius, the other Richard Hannon runner who came second.

Aidan O’Brien’s Camelot remains the 2/1 favourite for the 2000 Guineas, with Top Offer from the Roger Charlton yard at 5/1, Most Improved is 11/2 whilst Born To Sea and Trumpet Major comes next at around 8/1 in most Bookmakers horse racing odds for the first Classic of the season which takes place on Newmarket's Rowley Mile on Saturday 5th May.
