It was that man again as Frankie Dettori enjoyed his 75th Royal Ascot winner aboard 22/1 outsider Indie Angel.

Run over the straight mile, Dettori manoeuvred the four-year-old closest to the stands’ side rail and the duo finished strongly for an impressive two and a half-length success. Lady Bowthorpe was second, with the 11/4 favourite Queen Power a short-head further back in third.

Indie Angel’s victory gave the new training partnership of John and Thady Gosden its third winner of the week so far. Owner’s Cheveley Park Stud were enjoying a fifth win in this contest for older fillies and mares.

Trainers Quotes

John Gosden said: “Indie Angel won very well towards the backend of the season and I maybe just ran her too early in the spring.

“She had a complication in her last race and to say that she would win this by two and a half lengths would have been wishful thinking, but we were hopeful of a good run. She relaxed beautifully and looked like a different from her last run.

“Indie Angel has won a Group Two so maybe we can now climb higher. Nice races like the Sun Chariot are a possibility.”

Dettori said: “Everything felt right today. Indie Angel needs fast ground, she needs cover and needs plenty of room; she doesn’t like to be crowded, and we had all three things today.

“Things didn’t work out at Newmarket; she was too fresh and I couldn’t hold her, she saw plenty of daylight. I didn’t know what to expect, but she took off today. Today she reversed the form for the reasons I said. She shouldn’t have been 22/1, because some of her form is quite decent.

“Mrs Thompson [of Cheveley Park Stud] has been in racing for years and years and it's lovely for her to have another filly in the books who has won a Group race at Royal Ascot for breeding purposes. She has put so much investment and love into the sport, and it is always nice to ride a winner for them.”

Trainers Quotes

Cheveley Park Stud’s Chris Richardson said: “Indie Angel is a very talented filly, but she has her own mind. Frankie has ridden her a couple of times at Lingfield, he rode her and did a very similar thing - just set out behind and let her come round the field.

“Today the draw was to our advantage, as long as they didn't come over. So that was the worry, but she's a talented filly and we're just so excited.

“Sadly, Mrs T is not here, nor Richard, but I know there'll be so excited to have seen her win at home.”

He added: “We've had a wonderful year. It has been fantastic to start with phenomenal results at Cheltenham and then come to the Royal meeting here. To have bred the Coventry winner yesterday was another icing on the cake.”

William Jarvis said of the runner-up: “All credit to the winner. She beat us fair and square, but I think softer ground would have suited Lady Bowthorpe. It is getting pretty quick out there and is only going to get quicker today.

“I am delighted with Lady Bowthorpe. She has won a Group Two and has been second in a Group One and now this Group Two today.

“We might see if we go to the Falmouth or the Nassau.”
