Tiger to Pounce in Hot Haydock Handicap
02/07/10

Saturday's Old Newton Cup at Haydock promises to be the usual red hot affair with a host of horses having claims to a share of the very generous prize money on offer, writes Elliot Slater.

At odds of around 25/1 there are good reasons for expecting Siberian Tiger to put up a big performance at odds that will prove highly rewarding if he reaches a place or better. Those looking for horse racing tips should bear this in mind.

A talented and versatile sort, Siberian Tiger was formerly trained by Mick Channon for whom he put up a number of good performances and achieved a handicap rating as high as 102. After leaving Channon he went to Ireland to join Tony Martin's yard before returning to these shores to join Michael Wigham.

After a long break, the five-year-old son of Xaar returned to the fray in the Queen Mother Cup at York last month where he put in an eye-catching performance under Emily Jones to be a staying-on fourth of 19 runners to Desert Recluse, a run that suggested he has lost none of his old ability and could conceivably be up to holding his own in top handicap company. He is, there for, top of my weekly horse tips.

Set to race off a mark of 98, and with Steve Drowne sure to bring out the best in him, Wigham's charge looks tremendous value at current odds, a price that could well start to tumble if his gambling yard decide it is worth their while having a tilt at the ring even in such a tough event.

Hanoverian Baron looks a worthy favourite and there are a host of other contenders who are respected, but don't be the least bit surprised if Siberian Tiger pops up at a big price and lands the spoils.
