Hannon Issues Cliffs Ground Warning
21/07/10

Richard Hannon, enjoying another outstandingly successful season, has issued a warning about the participation of his star three-year-old miler Canford Cliffs in the eagerly awaited Group1 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood later this month, writes Elliot Slater.

Canford Cliffs

Earlier this year Canford Cliffs was seen by many Irish racing pundits as a doubtful stayer, but has well and truly laid that myth to rest in finishing third in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, hacking up in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh, and then putting up a devastating display to destroy a high class St James's Palace Stakes field at Royal Ascot in June.

A potential clash with last year's top notch miler Rip Van Winkle has been very much on the cards since Royal Ascot, but in a weekend interview Hannon made it clear that he won’t risk the son of Tagula if the ground is riding fast. He explained to horse racing tips pundits that last year he took a chance running the colt on fast ground in France in the Prix Morny and he came back jarred up and clearly doesn't cope with quick underfoot conditions.

The East Everleigh handler went on to hint that he would very much like to see the dual Group1 winner stay in training as a four-year-old, even though there has already been considerable interest in him as a potential stallion.

Of the yard's star older miler Paco Boy, last seen giving the mighty Goldikova a fright in the Queen Anne stakes last month, Hannon confirmed the five-year-old is an intended starter in the Prix Jaques le Marois, whilst his other high class three-year-old Dick Turpin, runner-up in two Guineas before chasing home Canford Cliffs at Ascot ahead of his imperious win in the Group1 Prix Jean Prat a fortnight ago, has no specific target at the moment but might possibly be given a run at 10 furlongs next time out.
