Godolphin Land Group1 German Feature
22/07/10

Despite him having seemingly limitless resources and considerable firepower at his disposal, it took Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor until July 17 of the 2010 to land a first Group 1 victory for Sheik Mohammed in 2010 when the classy Campanologist (33/10) took the Grosser Preis vonLotto Hamburg, in Germany, under stable jockey Frankie Dettori, writes Elliot Slater.

Since beating the high class Conduit against most horse racing tips in the 2008 Group2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, Campanologist has found it tough going at the major European and international fixtures, but has always been held in high regard by Godolphin who produced him to win at Meydan in March, also in Group 2 company.

At Hamburg on Saturday Dettori tracked the locally trained favourite Wiener Waltzer, until sending his mount up to challenge at the two furlong pole of the mile-and-a-half contest, before hitting the front at the distance and staying on well to win by three-quarters of a length. Another German colt Quijano came home third, with the Mark Johnston trained Jukebox Jury running a curious race and showing little interest in competing for much of the journey, before deciding to run on in the home straight to finish fourth.

Michael and had been very hopeful that his Allied Powers would give all racing tips pundits something to think about, but after looking as if he might well play a leading role in the finish , the Ioritz Mendizabal ridden son of Invincible Spirit, faded inside the last half furlong to finish fifth of the six runners.

A beaming Dettori was clearly delighted that the son of Kingmambo has finally managed to shed his maiden Group 1 tag, whilst an equally ebullient bin Suroor suggested that the five-year-old will most likely return to Germany later on this summer in an attempt to add further Group 1 wins to his tally.
