Monet's Garden Fights for His Life
05/01/11

The 13 year old who scored his third Old Roan Chase victory at Aintree in October also picked up an injury that day which has become infected leading to him struggling to recover. So serious is the infection, it has entered bone and become life threatening.

Monet's Garden

One of the joys of national hunt racing was watching the distinctive grey lead a pack in a chase. As sure-footed as they come he was always found at the head of the field. He was so exciting, especially in his wins, when he stretched a field, just as he did at Aintree in October. Doing all the hard work from the front he just kept going, and there was no finer sight in racing. His last race was the Old Roan at Aintree, a course on which he raced, and won, more often than any other. 5 wins and 2 further places from nine runs are testament to his liking for the track. 3 of the wins came in the Old Roan in 2007, 2009 & 2010.

But this would not be his defining moment in racing, both owner David Wesley Yates and trainer Nicky Richards nominated his 2006 runner up spot to Voy Por Ustedes as his greatest achievement, if not his highest rated performance. Giving the legendary Voy Por 5lb on the day he ran a blinder of a race to be beaten only just over a length up the hill at Cheltenham.

Facebook, Twitter and the Racing Post discussion pages have been full of comment and praise not to mention best wishes for arguably the best loved grey since Desert Orchid.
