07/12/11

Betting on horses can be an almost infinitely intricate undertaking. There’s a good reason why only experienced and well informed bettors are successful in the long-run.

There are countless variables involved in horse handicapping. There are horse-related variables and jockey-related ones as well. Some people tend to disregard variables linked to the jockey, but that in itself is a huge mistake.

Each and every one of these variables hides the possibility of another handicapping mistake. While some neglect the jockey factor, others tend to focus on it too much and they end up betting the jockey rather than the horse.

Here’s why that too is a mistake: while some jockeys do indeed have better stats than others, that doesn’t mean they’re able to get the horse to perform better than what it’s naturally capable of. People tend to overlook the fact that popular jockeys often get good rides, so what it really comes down to is popularity and not a technical difference that the jockey makes.

Some bettors adhere to the axiom that the best jockey on the worst horse will quite probably not hit the board, while the worst jockey on the best horse will quite probably win the race. That said, one also has to consider the fact that while he cannot squeeze more out of the horse than its natural max, the jockey can in fact ruin the race for the horse. Also, some jockeys know how to ride some horses better than others. In order to identify the best horse/jockey combination, you should take a look at the past performance matrix of the horse on which you intend to wager.

While normally one shouldn’t pay an overwhelming amount of attention to the jockey, there are cases when this variable has to be considered as well. When there are jockey changes, one is best off marking the horse on his selection form and taking it into account when wagering.
Trainer changes present similar issues, so those too should be considered as well.

Medication – now there’s something you won’t hear/read about every day. Medication for horse races is a massive factor to consider. Lasix is something that has a tendency of pretty much always improving the horse to which it’s given for the first time. Bute on the other hand is different. Some horses need Bute to run well, others can’t run with Bute at all, so if it’s given to a horse for the first time, the variable will indeed become a giant unknown. Generally, the way to tell how a horse runs with Bute is to take a look at its past record and include the medical column in the review too. The letter B indicates whether or not the horse was on Bute in any particular race.

Horses that ran well on Bute and are taken off it tend to have a bad race, so make sure you know the medical situation and that you do indeed take it into account.

Layoffs are also similarly important factors to consider, but more on those in a future piece.

As a savvy online poker player, you should never play a single hand without rakeback. If you’re a high volume player, poker rakeback will eventually dwarf the profits that you reap at the tables, just ask any of the online poker props who play at the various online poker sites that offer such deals.
