Rain Will Help Mull Of Killough in William Hill Lincoln
23/03/10

John Spearing is hoping a drop of rain can help the lightly-raced Mull Of Killough (12/1 with William Hill) land the £125,000 William Hill Lincoln (3.10pm) over a mile at Doncaster on Saturday, March 27.

doncaster racecourse

The four-year-old, one of 76 five-day acceptors for the historic handicap, has registered three wins from six starts and will be having his first outing since defeating fellow William Hill Lincoln hope Light From Mars (33/1) by half a length on good to firm going over a mile at Haydock in September.

Spearing revealed today: “Mull Of Killough will go to the William Hill Lincoln on Saturday. I am pleased with his progress through the winter and it is a case of so far so good.

“He likes a bit of give in the ground - he is definitely better with a bit of cut so this rain that is around will all be on his side. I was pleased with his win over a mile at Haydock in September because Jamie Spencer rode him and said he hated the ground but won in spite of it.

“It is always difficult to say if they have improved from three to four until you run them but Mull Of Killough’s work is very good and he has had no interruptions or hold ups. He is working well at home and that is as much as I can say, really.”

Mia’s Boy (16/1) tops the weights on 9st 10lb for the William Hill Lincoln and trainer Chris Dwyer is hoping his stable star can improve upon his fourth place in last year’s renewal.

The six-year-old proved himself among the top bracket of mile handicappers last term with a third place in the Royal Hunt Cup among a bevy of fine efforts that included a second course victory in November’s robinhoodairport.com Conditions Stakes over seven furlongs.

Mia’s Boy was also tested in the highest company in 2009, finishing down the field behind Rip Van Winkle in the Group One Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in July, and was runner-up to subsequent Grade One winner and Dubai World Cup hope Gitano Hernando at Wolverhampton in September.

Dwyer revealed today: “Mia’s Boy has top-weight but he’ll be going there in good form. I was very pleased with his run at Wolverhampton and he has come out of that fine.

“He has always run well at Doncaster so hopefully that will continue on Saturday. He just wants nice ground. Good or good to soft would be fine but I would not like it to get heavy because that would just blunt his speed.

“He ran in some really good races last year and his second to Gitano Hernando at Wolverhampton looks particularly good. It would be nice to go to Doncaster on Saturday and run well again.”

Penitent is the 6/1 favourite for the William Hill Lincoln with the race sponsor and the William Haggas-trained four-year-old has yet to finish out of the first two in five starts, including when dead-heating in a mile handicap on Polytrack at Kempton in September.

The Brian Meehan-trained Manassas (9/1) has already scored over a mile on Town Moor, having scored in a handicap at last year’s Ladbrokes St Leger meeting. John Gosden, who sent out Expresso Star to victory in last year’s William Hill Lincoln, may this year rely on Newmarket handicap scorer Doctor Crane (10/1).

Collateral Damage (20/1) also boats winning form over the course and distance of the William Hill Lincoln, winning the final race of the 2009 Flat season for Tim Easterby, while Barry Hills has engaged last year’s Royal Hunt Cup runner-up Huzzah (20/1).

Other notable contenders include Tiger Reigns (16/1), who notched a hat-trick of handicap wins for Michael Dods last summer, Prime Exhibit (20/1), one of six entries remaining from the stable of Richard Fahey, and the Richard Hannon-trained Vitznau (20/1), who was an impressive winner of the williamhill.com Lincoln Trial at Wolverhampton on March 13.

Final declarations for the William Hill Lincoln, which has a safety limit of 22, must be made prior to 10.30am on Thursday, March 25. Horses that are eliminated from the feature race will be eligible to run in the £50,000 William Hill Spring Mile (2.00pm), run over the same distance.
