    Tanya's Blog - 28th May 2011

A blustery wind has changed direction at Newmarket and as much rain as there is, it soon dries up, there’ll be little or no effect on the ground, if anything with no more rain it will become faster. With so many horses stating as running ‘only if the ground is suitable’ it has been a quiet morning in the Betting Offices and on the exchanges.

Newmarket hosts a food and drink festival and on arriving yesterday I have to admit on deserving a large portion of humble pie. In my blog I stated there would be just a small gathering at the Rowley Mile course, instead I was met with around 4,000 all enjoy tasty morsels and free samples of pork pies, cheeses, ice cream and large fairy cakes along with some good value in the betting ring.

The was also a false dawn with my racecard tipping, after finding REGAL REALM at 25-1 at the start of the day, nothing else came close! Here’s hoping for better luck today with 2.20 EKTIBAAS, 2.50 BUTHELEZI, 3.25 LEXI’S HERO, 4.00 SHAVANSKY, 4.35 RIO GRANDE, 5.10 RAVE, 5.45 TROVARE. The horses that really stand out for me today at HQ are Ektibaas at 2.20 and Shavansky at 4.00.

What a great guest SIS/Racing Post Betting Shop Manager of the Year proved to be, Michael Demetriou, representing the Independents, Choicebet, who just have five shops. What should be alarming to the industry is although every other word with us is either Carlton House or the Derby, within the Betting Shops it is not! These outlets are tremendous barometers for racing, with comments and views pertinent to current matters, yet with blithely choose to ignore them and just plough on. Quite simply enough has not been done to advertise the Investec Derby and we have a golden opportunity and slowly but surely we are relinquishing it.

Back to today and check the non runners as there are plenty, certainly significant ones at the top of the betting, I am hoping REGAL PARADE runs as I think he’ll win. Another fancy for me is Colloquial in the 2.05.
It will be really intriguing to see how many turn up at Newmarket and the strength of the betting ring, I suspect the changes will be volatile as there will be little or no money.
