Captain's Blog - Saturday 4th August The Glorious meeting comes to a close today with the Stewards’ Cup as the feature event. I have no strong view on the race, but if I could have picked my own draw I would have gone low. Horses can win from high draws, but I have always had a bias towards the far side as far as this race is concerned. It is an opinion rather than a stats-based fact. I am not big on stats in any way, because as compelling as they may sometimes seem they are not a good guide to what is going to happen. They simply tell you what has happened in the past. Where stats are involved, large sample sizes make them more compelling, but it would be folly to rely on them for punting purposes. Russell Grant and Mystic Meg get predictions right now and then and whilst stats in racing are comforting they are a dangerous tool to use. Someone once said to me that St Helen's rugby league team had a very poor record when playing Huddersfield at the Galpharm Stadium and thus were unlikely to win when they next met at their venue. I could not believe my ears because such a statement completely ignored the fact that the Saints team had different players now and a different coach as did the Huddersfield team, thus in this case the stats were of no use. In fact they were completely misleading. Beware all stats and deal with what is in front of you would be my advice. Thus as far as the Stewards Cup is concerned it is probably best to back the horse that you think is the fastest and in my opinion if it is drawn low so much the better. My selection yesterday was Gatewood, who ran well but was undone by a slow pace and he is very much a horse to keep on your side. Today I am going to tip up an unraced two-year-old. I do not make a habit of listening to racing gossip and rumour, but I do know that the Richard Hannon-trained Wentworth is one of his best two year olds. This horse runs in the 4.30pm at Goodwood and is expected to win. He holds big race entries and cost plenty and as I understand it can really run. We are heading to the Twickenham Stoop today to watch the London Broncos play Salford and are planning to make a day of it by taking a picnic lunch. It will be nice to get out for the day. We did the same last week when we watched the Men's Olympic cycling road race and we are changing sport, but doing the same thing today. If you fancy a sports bet today I would advise you back the Broncos to win this afternoon. They have had a terrible season, but have changed their coach and under him have played a good deal better than they have all season when narrowly beaten by the Catalan Dragons last time. Salford are a poor side and the Broncos can turn them over now they have proper leadership and direction.
Today's Selection 4.30 Goodwood – Wentworth
