Goodwood Racecourse Lifetime Achievement Award 2008
- The Earl Cadogan
09/07/08

The 2008 Goodwood Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to The Earl Cadogan.

A Member of the Jockey Club since 1967, Lord Cadogan has held many posts over the last 41 years having been Chairman of the Administration and Finance Committee in 1983 and then again from 1987 to 1989. During this latter period, he was also Deputy Senior Steward. In the period 1985 to 1987, he was an Appointee to the Horserace Betting Levy Board.

His association with Goodwood as a race meeting Steward dates back to 1980. As one of the longest-serving panel stewards, he has been Chairman of the Panel of Stewards on many occasions and presided over numerous enquiries, always taking a keen interest in the turf husbandry of the course and keeping up to date with changes to the Rules, Orders and General Instructions of Racing.

Lord Cadogan is extremely well known within the racing fraternity for his famous Eton Blue silks which have been carried by many winners over the years, sadly though not at Goodwood as yet!

In the 1970s Roman Holiday was a prolific winner with 28 wins over hurdles and fences. Money Market finished fourth in the 1975 Grand National and Trysting Day, also a regular visitor to the winner’s enclosure, were all trained by Verly Bewicke.

Over the next two decades, he enjoyed success with Tim Forster, Henrietta Knight and Henry Daly. Notable successes were achieved with the likes of Very Light, Wantage and Rambling Song with Forster while Henrietta Knight had a successful start to her career with Glen Lochan, Well Wrapped, Wade Road and Hymn d’Amour. Jakari was probably his most successful jumper with Henry Daly.

On the Flat, Lord Cadogan has had a long standing association with Henry Candy. He was also a great supporter of the late Dick Hern who had many successes for him but in latter years it has been John Dunlop who has delivered the majority of his winners.

Jedburgh, Conspiracy, Water Jump, Romantic Affair, Free Offer, Presbyterian Nun and 11-time winner Right Wing have all been under the care of John Dunlop, with many of them owner-bred.

Racing has benefited hugely from Lord Cadogan’s great enthusiasm and desire to make racing a sport to be enjoyed and admired for its organisation and professionalism.

As the Duke of Richmond put it: “Charles has been a great ambassador for horse racing and in his various roles with the Jockey Club has ensured that our sport has continued to progress in an increasingly competitive environment.

“As an owner he has had many successes, Jedburgh’s victory in the Buckingham Palace Handicap provided him with one of his greatest moments as an owner and we can only hope that he can secure a winner at Goodwood sometime in the near future.

Lord Cadogan was presented with his Award at The Ivy in London on Monday, July 7, by Peter Willett, a Director of the Racecourse, representing the Duke of Richmond, Chairman, Goodwood Racecourse.
