Star Names Set for Punchestown Festival Top-class entries are revealed today for the 11 early-closing races at the 2009 Punchestown Festival, which takes place from Tuesday, April 28, to Saturday, May 2. As well as the cream of the domestic jumping talent, many of the best-known names in Britain look set to travel over for Ireland’s premier jump meeting, which this year boasts 2.5 million euros in prize money. The opening day feature on Tuesday, April 28, is the 200,000 euros GRADE 1 KERRYGOLD CHAMPION CHASE in which trainer Tom Cooper is considering running his exciting novice Forpadydeplasterer. The seven-year-old began a superb first season over fences with victory over the same course and distance in a beginners’ chase in October before progressing to finish second in Grade 1 company on three occasions, in the Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse in November, the Arkle Perpetual Challenge Cup at Leopardstown in January and when two and a half lengths behind Cooldine in the Dr P J Moriarty Novice Chase at the same course the following month. He gained a deserved success at the highest level at the Cheltenham Festival on his latest appearance on March 10, when he battled on bravely to defeat subsequent Grade 1 victor Kalahari King in The Irish Independent Arkle Chase. “We gave Forpadydeplasterer a speculative entry in the Kerrygold Champion Chase and we were leaning towards the Cathal Ryan Memorial Novice Chase but I could well be tempted to run him in the Champion,” revealed Cooper. “He’s in super order at the moment and I couldn’t have been more pleased with his run in the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham. Everything came together for us on the day and he won really well. The form has been given a boost with Kalahari King’s victory at Aintree last weekend and Cooldine’s win in the RSA Chase didn’t do us any harm either. “We would possibly have a bit to find on the official ratings in the Kerrygold Champion Chase but Forpadydeplasterer deserves to take his chance. He could go over further in the future but my plan throughout the season has to been to keep him at two miles - he’s a big horse and I felt that the more time we gave him, the better. “The ideal situation would be to have ground similar as we had a Cheltenham but, as long as it’s decent jumping ground, then he should line up in either race at Punchestown.” Other notable entries in the Kerrygold Champion Chase include the Colm Murphy-trained Big Zeb, who won the Cathal Ryan Memorial Novice Chase at last year’s Punchestown Festival, while Willie Mullins has entered Scotsirish, successful in the Betfair.com Novice Handicap Chase here last year, and Grade 3 scorer Irish Invader, who could step back in trip after running a solid 11th in the Grand National on Saturday. Trainer Paul Nicholls has entered the novices I’msingingtheblues and Oomeyade as well as last season’s Kerrygold Champion Chase hero Twist Magic in the two-mile contest. Although Master Minded is not among the initial entries, Nicholls still has the option of supplementing the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase winner at the second-entry stage on April 23. After missing possible engagements in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup and the John Smith’s Grand National, War Of Attrition is one of 22 entries for the 275,000 euros GRADE 1 PUNCHESTOWN GUINNESS GOLD CUP, the feature race of the second day of the Irish National Hunt Festival, Wednesday, April 29. Mouse Morris’ stable star won the Punchestown feature in 2006. His opponents look set to include Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Imperial Commander, winner of the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase at last month’s Cheltenham Festival. “Imperial Commander is on target for Punchestown and, as long as the ground is fine, then he will run in the Guinness Gold Cup. I don’t think that he will have a problem with the step up in distance and he’s come out of Cheltenham in good form,” said Twiston-Davies. “I was delighted with his victory in the Ryanair Chase and the form has been really franked with Voy Por Ustedes and Schindlers Hunt finishing first and second in the Melling Chase at Aintree.” The home defence could include the Willie Mullins-trained novice Cooldine, runaway winner of the RSA Chase at Cheltenham, Drinmore Novice Chase scorer Trafford Lad, Welsh National winner Notre Pere, and Schindlers Hunt, who was narrowly denied in the Grade 1 Melling Chase at Aintree. The leading staying hurdlers are set to contest the three-mile 200,000 euros GRADE 1 LADBROKES.COM WORLD SERIES HURDLE on Thursday, April 30, including the aptly named Punchestowns, who was second in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes World Hurdle at Cheltenham. Last year’s winner Blazing Bailey, recent Aintree victor Ogee, who landed the Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle for trainer Renee Robeson and the Philip Hobbs-trained Fair Along are also entered. Six entries from the stable of Willie Mullins include impressive Cheltenham Festival winner Quevega, Fiveforthree and Grade 1 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle victor Mikael D’Haguenet, while fellow Cheltenham winner Ninetieth Minute could represent Tom Taaffe. Other notable potential runners include Brave Inca, Catch Me and Ladbrokes World Hurdle third Powerstation. Nigel Twiston-Davies is looking forward to bringing over Pettifour, who finished fourth in last week’s Grade 2 John Smith’s Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree. “The plan is to let Pettifour take his chance in the Ladbrokes.com World Series Hurdle and he ran a blinder to finish fourth on good ground at Aintree and he actually didn’t run that badly at Cheltenham - he just didn’t quite come down the hill well enough,” said Twiston-Davies. “He’s come out of Aintree in good order and I would be looking to see him run well at Punchestown.” Last year’s winner Punjabi is set to return to Punchestown to defend his crown in the 200,000 euros GRADE 1 RABOBANK CHAMPION HURDLE on Friday, May 1, and the Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old, triumphant in this year’s Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle, could re-oppose last season’s second and third, Sublimity and Ebaziyan. Solwhit, victorious in the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle on Saturday, is a likely starter at Punchestown while other entries in the two-mile contest include Grade 1 winners Catch Me, Sizing Europe and Hardy Eustace as well as last year’s Ballymore Champion Four Year Old Hurdle scorer Won In The Dark. A total of 19 horses have been entered for the 130,000 euros GRADE 1 BALLYMORE CHAMPION FOUR YEAR OLD HURDLE, highlight of the final day of the Irish National Hunt Festival, Saturday, May 2. These include Grade 2 winner Jumbo Rio, the Alan King-trained pair of Saticon and Silk Hall, JCB Triumph Hurdle third Mourad, and Ebadiyan, who ran out when travelling well at Cheltenham and would be sure to come home to a memorable reception from his trainer Oliver Brady if successful at Punchestown. The Tim Vaughan-trained Ski Sunday, who has finished runner-up at Aintree and Cheltenham, and the Paul Nicholls-trained Hebridean are other entries from Britain. The 90,000 euros GRADE 1 BOYLESPORTS.COM CHAMPION NOVICE CHASE on Tuesday, April 28, has received an entry of 26, headed by the impressive RSA Chase winner Cooldine and Joncol, who has won all three of his starts over fences. Other notable entries for the 3m 1f contest include the Noel Meade-trained pair of Aran Concerto and Casey Jones, as well as Drinmore Novice Chase scorer Trafford Lad, who has twice been victorious at Punchestown in Grade 3 company already this season. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping to get to Punchestown should his What A Friend line up in the Grade 1 event. Willie Mullins also looks set to have a strong hand in the novice hurdles, as Mikael D’Haguenet, Hurricane Fly and Cousin Vinny head the 27 entries for the two-mile 100,000 euros GRADE 1 EVENING HERALD CHAMPION NOVICE HURDLE over two miles on Tuesday, April 28, in which the williamhill.com Supreme Novices’ Hurdle first and second, Go Native and Medermit, could reoppose. The Lucy Wadham-trained El Dancer and American Trilogy, who finished first and second in a Grade 2 novices’ hurdle at Aintree last week, could meet again while actor James Nesbitt is looking forward to coming to Punchestown to cheer on the Nicky Henderson-trained Riverside Theatre, who he part-owns. Mikael D’Haguenet, Hurricane Fly and Cousin Vinny are also among the entries for the GRADE 1 LAND ROVER CHAMPION NOVICE HURDLE over two and a half miles on Friday, May 1, for which 36 horses have been entered. Emma Lavelle’s Aintree winner Bouggler, Nicky Henderson pair of Ainama and Tasheba, the Alan King-trained Trenchant and Copper Bleu, from Philip Hobbs’ stable, are also engaged. Forpadydeplaster’s other possible target, the 90,000 euros GRADE 1 CATHAL RYAN MEMORIAL NOVICE CHASE on Thursday, April 30 has attracted a superb entry. The Ferdy Murphy-trained Kalahari King, winner of the Grade 1 John Smith’s Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree, is engaged as is Alan King’s progressive handicapper Oh Crick, a winner at both Cheltenham and Aintree this year. Nicholls boasts a strong team in Clive Smith’s Free World, I’msingingtheblues, Oomeyade and Tatenen. The Noel Meade-trained Aran Concerto, who has not run since winning in November and Willie Mullins’ trio of Barker, Deutschland and Jayo are others entered. Apart from the nine early-closing Grade 1 races, Punchestown looks set to host some extremely competitive handicap action, with 50 horses entered in the 2m 5f 90,000 euros BETFAIR NOVICE HANDICAP CHASE on Friday, May 1, and 83 entries for the two and a half-mile 120,000 euros WHITEWATER SHOPPING CENTRE HURDLE on Saturday, May 2.
