Delegator
Arabian Gleam has captured this prize for the past two years and remains on course to attempt the hat-trick, while the in-form Godolphin stable has half a dozen left to choose from including 2,000 Guineas runner-up Delegator, Evasive and Group One winner Rio De La Plata.

Six of the remaining entries hail from Ireland including 1,000 Guineas fourth Heart Shaped, trained by Aidan O’Brien and Intense Focus, successful in the Group One Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket last season for handler Jim Bolger. John Oxx has left in the promising Rayeni, who won both his starts as a juvenile and beat all bar Mastercraftsman in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on his sole start this season.

Marcus Tregoning could be represented by Finjaan, who was successful over seven furlongs in Group Two company at Goodwood last month, while Eve Johnson Houghton recently revealed that the DFS Park Stakes is a possible target for exciting prospect The Cheka, who is part-owned by comedian Mel Smith. Main Aim finished a fine second in the Group One July Cup over six furlongs at Newmarket but disappointed last time out behind Finjaan. Stimulation won the Group Two Challenge Stakes at Newmarket last season and his handler Hughie Morrison has indicated that the DFS Park Stakes is the four-year-old’s target on his belated return to action this season.

For the second year, the DFS Park Stakes will be run with Group One conditions and it is hoped that the contest may be upgraded to Group One status at some point in the future.

56 GO FORWARD FOR DFS CHAMPAGNE STAKES

Also run on Ladbrokes St Leger Day, Saturday, September 12, is the £100,000 DFS Champagne Stakes, which has 56 acceptors after the scratchings’ deadline. Always one of the best two-year-old contests of the season and often a highly informative pointer to the future, the DFS Champagne Stakes takes place over seven furlongs for colts and geldings.

Arcano was thrust to the head of the betting for next year’s 2,000 Guineas when successful in the Group One Prix Morny at Deauville on August 23 and is one of eight remaining entries from the yard of Brian Meehan.

Westphalia collected the DFS Champagne Stakes in 2008 for Aidan O’Brien, giving the master of Ballydoyle a first success in the historic race. This year the Coolmore team still have 12 to choose from including Cape Blanco, who is unbeaten in three starts with his most recent victory coming in the Group Two Futurity Stakes at Fairyhouse on August 22.

No other current trainer can match the record of Barry Hills in the DFS Champagne Stakes, with the Lambourn handler having saddled five previous winners. This year the Hills yard could be represented by Khattaab, who was an impressive seven-length winner of a maiden at Haydock on August 7 on his only outing so far.

Shakespearean, trained by Mark Johnston, got the better of Godolphin’s Buzzword in the Group Three Solario Stakes over seven furlongs at Sandown on August 22 and the duo could re-oppose at Doncaster on September 12. Johnston also has Layali Al Andalus to consider. The Halling colt is already a course and distance winner, having landed a maiden impressively by seven lengths on June 27.

The Godolphin operation has been enjoying a great time with its juveniles this season, boasting a strike rate of 33%, and trainer Saeed bin Suroor has a total of five contenders remaining in the DFS Champagne Stakes. In addition to Buzzword, other possible starters for Godolphin include Poet’s Voice, who was beaten under a length when third in the Group Three Acomb Stakes at York on August 18 when he finished behind Elusive Pimpernel and Emerald Commander.

Another interesting contender is the William Haggas-trained Quarrel, who has won comfortably on both his starts to date at Ascot and Chester, while John Ryan recently confirmed his stable star Silver Grecian, a Group Two winner at Newmarket in July, as on course to make his next appearance in the DFS Champagne Stakes.
