Karl Burke – A Charity 2,500 Mile Cycle Ride!
10/03/10

April 8, 2010: Racehorse trainer Karl Burke will embark on the greatest challenge of his life when he leaves Perth racecourse on his trusty pushbike.

May 17, 2010: Karl will finish his 2,500 mile bike ride in Newton Abbott, having cycled to every race course in the UK!

Karl BurkeThis unique fundraising event is rapidly becoming a Forest Gump style adventure, as Karl will be joined along the way, by various celebrities, who will do stints of the ride with him. Look out for some famous jockeys, footballers and TV presenters, and if you do happen to pass him on the road, please dig deep and make a donation!

In 2009, racehorse trainer Karl Burke received a year long ban from the sport he passionately loves, and during a period of plumbing the depths and considering his future, he decided to turn a negative into a positive, and put together this unique charity bike ride. His plan to cycle a grand total of just over 2,500 miles from Perth to Newton Abbott via every UK racecourse in between will hopefully generate charitable donations in excess of £100,000.

Karl is supporting a selection of worthwhile charities – Macmillan Nurses, Injured Jockeys Fund (Northern Oaksey House), Racing Welfare, Riding for the Disabled, Great Ormond Street, Starlight, DAFA and CAFT.

Karl comments: “Following the ban, I had two options, I could continue to focus on the injustice of it all and go deeper into despair, or I could make a decision to do something positive, and I chose the latter. The ride has been six months in the planning, and now I am just looking forward to getting into the saddle (!) and getting on with it – it will be very hard work, but I can’t wait to get started.”
