September: UK Horse Racing at its Best
14/09/10

Even as thoroughbred racing seems to barely struggle along in the good old US of A, in the UK, the month of September is promising plenty of action, and unlike on this side of the pond, spectators are likely to flock to each and every one of the horse racing festivals on the schedule.

Two of the September festivals are already in the books and there’s still plenty more to come. The month kicked of on the 4th with the Betfred Sprint Cup Day held at Haydock Park Racecourse. The Sprint Cup was the Main Event of the day, but there were plenty of other races too, offering bettors numerous opportunities to get their monies into the middle.

The Be Friendly Handicap Stakes, the Kingspin Old Borough Cup and the Goals Galore Superior Cup were the events providing more than enough action for the day.

The second festival of the month was the St. Leger Festival. Held between the 8th and the 11th. The Main Event was the St Leger Stakes, but there was much more to the festival than that. Hospitality tents were set up and various competitions including ladies’ activities were held through the days leading up to the highlight of the festival.

The month would not be complete without the Ayr Gold Cup Festival, the event which has delighted horse racing enthusiasts and bettors for the last 200 years at Ayr Racecourse. Even if one does not intend to wager on the horses being pretty much ignorant to the sport, attending the Ayr Gold Cup Festival makes plenty of sense. The surroundings alone are worth it, and the unquestionable authenticity of the entire setup may just get even the previously ignorant hooked.

Ascot racecourse will see some action as well. The Queen Elizabeth II Weekend will feature no fewer than 9 Group One races offering plenty of action for bettors. Among these races will be the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, the Listed Royal EBF Transformers and Rectifiers Stakes and the John Guest Diadem Stakes. If betting on the horses is not the main reason you go to the track, you’ll still find plenty of interesting things to do at the hospitality tents. The food will be great as always and there will be ladies’ activities too. The Queen Elizabeth II Weekend takes place from the 24th to the 26th of September.

The racing month will be wrapped up on the 30th, with the Cambridge Meeting at Newmarket Racecourse. The meeting will feature 3 Group 1 races: the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes, the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes and the Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes.

As you can plainly see, while tracks struggle with attendance problems in the US, in the UK the only problem racing fans are confronted with is which event to attend. You can pretty much bet that attendance will be high at all of the above listed events, and the betting will be plentiful too.
