02/11/10

Workforce, the short-priced favourite for Saturday's Breeders Cup Turf, looks far from certain to run, after connections expressed serious doubts about the state of the going at Churchill Downs.

Sir Michael Stoute who trained the colt to win both the Investec Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is set to arrive in Louisville on Tuesday and will receive all the latest information from his assistant, Stuart Messenger.

Speaking after the colt had worked over seven-furlongs this morning he said: “I'm extremely disappointed with the ground, I'm going to have a serious discussion with the boss. The horse is too valuable to risk.”

Jockey Ryan Moore then added: “The horse is fine and in good shape, but the ground is quicker than ideal. We'll see how things progress through the week.”

News from the track though is that superintendent, Butch Lehr, has no intention of changing his current regime of watering for ten minutes every evening.

Things haven't gone well for the anticipated favourite so far with his journey to the United States not going at all satisfactory. The current 5/4 favourite with Victor Chandler , William Hill and Stan James spent a total of eighteen hours in reaching his stable, with only eight of those spent in the air due to a bomb scare.

Behkabad remains the second favourite at 7/2 with Ladbrokes , but that price could shorten as news of Workforce's troubled visit circulates.
