Paul Hanagan Crowned Champion Flat Jockey 2010

Paul Hanagan is the 2010 Champion Jockey on the flat after a determined and prolonged challenge from rival Richard Hughes faltered on the last day.

The epic struggle was played to conclusion on Saturday when the flat season concluded on Town Moor; the traditional home of the opening turf meeting in the Spring. Hanagan went into the final day with a lead of just two and with neither jockey finding a winner on the final day, that is how things ended up.
An understandably delighted Paul Hanagan said; "I owe the boss (Richard Fahey) so much, I've been with him for 14 years and I owe him a lot. Also my agent Richard Hale - without him I wouldn't be here now. It sounds great being called champion jockey, I think it will take a while to sink in. I'd just like to say what a gentleman Richard Hughes has been, I had a lot of respect for him before but even more now."
Hughes was not too down-hearted and said: "I'm delighted for Paul, he's a great lad, it wasn't to be. "I gave it a good go, my agent did a great job, I think I rode 23 winners in the last 10 days alone which is a feat in itself. Take nothing away from Paul, he led from the start, he deserves it.”
No flat action in Britain on Sunday but the highly promising Mediolanum should be very hard to beat in the opening novice hurdle at Ffos Las. The form of his second last time after winning an Irish bumper looks decent and the Twiston-Davies yard have their horses in good order.
