Teal Star Gets Brits off the Mark in Dubai
14/01/11

The Dubai Carnival fixture saw its first British winner of 2011 when Roger Teal’s grand servant Steele Tango came from well off the pace to land the valuable Master Collection Handicap on the turf course at Meydan, under a tremendous ride from former champion jockey Ryan Moore, writes Elliot Slater.

Giving the Surrey-based handler the richest prize of his training career (£67,307), Steele Tango was landing his fourth success to go alongside a far greater number of placed efforts in smart company. The six-year-old, winner of the 2009 Group 3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket where he got the better of Glass Harmonium by a head, was runner-up in the same race last October and also finished a fine second in the Cambridgeshire Handicap a fortnight earlier.

Racing in Dubai for the first time, the 110-rated son of Okawango was held up by Moore towards the rear of the field for the nine furlong contest, then made smooth progress from the two furlong marker before being produced with a perfectly timed run to cut down Frankie Dettori on the Saeed bin Surror-trained Enak, leading on the line to win by a short-head. It was the sort of performance that delights those who spend hours poring over the horse racing odds.

An ecstatic Teal was quick to praise the ride given his horse by Moore, going on to point out how important a success at this level on an international stage this was for a small yard like his Ashtead operation. Steele Tango is set to remain in Dubai throughout the Carnival and may next be seen stepping up into Group 2 company for a possible shot at the Al Rashidiya Stakes on January 26.

Although denied victory on Enak, Frankie Dettori stole the riding honours at Meydan on Thursday evening, landing a double for Godolphin on bin Suroor’s Mendip and Wajir.
