Vedette Takes Centre Stage at Navan
16/02/11

Colm Murphy’s talented mare Voler La Vedette has endured a frustrating time for much of this season chasing the shadows of both leading Champion Hurdle candidate Hurricane Fly and the smart Solwhit since her winning return to action at Punchestown in October, but she galloped back onto the winning trail at Navan on Sunday when easily landing the Grade 2 Ladbrokes.com Boyne Hurdle, writes Elliot Slater.

Those looking at horse racing Ireland should note she’s stepped up to two-miles-five furlongs for the first time in her career, the seven-year-old could always be spotted travelling best in midfield and only had to be given the slightest encouragement by jockey Andrew Lynch before picking up some decent rivals and leaving them for dead. The daughter of King’s Theatre ran out a facile two-length winner from Rigour Bob Back, with Oscar Dan Dan three-quarters-of-a-length back in third, just ahead of Stonemaster.

Pundits studying Irish racing tips previously ruled out taking on Willie Mulllins’ star mare Quevega in the David Nicholson mares race at the Cheltenham Festival next month. Many wondered if Murphy might just have a change of heart having witnessed the ease with which Voler La Vedette dispatched the opposition, but he remained steadfast in his insistence that she will not go to Cheltenham and will instead target major races at Punchestown and possibly Fairyhouse.

For his part, Lynch confirmed that the mare relished the extra distance and was always travelling in her comfort zone having been flat to the boards in recent outings against speed merchants such as the smart Hurricane Fly. Looking further ahead, there is every chance that Voler La Vedette might take in the ‘David Nicholson’ race at next year’s Cheltenham Festival, whilst if she proves capable of acting at a high level over three miles, it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that she might even make up into a candidate for the World Hurdle as well.
