Dialed In Can Upset Animal Kingdom’s Triple Crown Bid
20/05/11

It’s the second leg of the American Triple Crown on Saturday and Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom, who is bidding to become the first horse since 1978 to win the crown, has been drawn in favourably in stall eleven for the 2011 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday and to English born trainer, Graham Motion, is confident about the colt's chances and has booked John Velazquez for the ride once more. Bookmakers and punters on both sides of the Atlantic are also impressed, shortening his odds over the past few days from 5/2 to around 7/4 favourite to take the race.

Despite disappointing in the Kentucky Derby, Dialed In, drawn next to the favourite in stall ten has also seen plenty of support to win the race and make amends for his Churchill Downs run. Dialed In’s trainer, Nick Zito, believes that the horse will have improved and is expecting him to be right there come the final straight with a strong pace much more likely, which will work in the favour of this hold up performer; he is currently the second favourite at around 5/1 and should he win, he will pick up a $5.5m bonus due to him winning the Florida Derby earlier in the season and with a further $600,000 available to the winner, Dialed In has the opportunity to win the biggest ever prize in US horse racing history.

Also well supported is Mucho Macho Man, who was third behind Animal Kingdom who was third behind Animal Kingdom at Churchill Downs two weeks ago. He is sure to improve for that last run but whether or not he can improve enough to reverse the form with the winner is a doubt. The same applies to Shackleford, who finished fourth.

Dance City from the Todd Pletcher stable has to be respected although his only form as a three year old came with his third place in the Arkansas Derby last month. Although being supported in the market, the form simply does not hold up.

Animal Kingdom was went under the radar when taking the Kentucky Derby at odds of a shade over 20/1 and was a very convincing winner and it is hard to see any of his rivals in the Preakness Stakes beating him on that form. However, Dialed In had excuses when favourite on that occasion and can reverse the form and at the more attractive odds, can extend the search for the next Triple Crown winner to a 34th year.
