Darley Irish Oaks Betting Preview – Laughing Lashes Too Good to Miss at 14-1 11/07/11

The Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh on July 17 is shaping up be a cracking contest, with the English Oaks first, second, fourth and fifth, Dancing Rain, Wonder of Wonders, Blue Bunting and Misty For Me respectively, set to renew rivalry, while Havant, who was down the pack at Epsom, also set to take her chance.

Dancing Rain

Dancing Rain will be bidding to become the eighth horse since 1988 to complete the English-Irish Oaks double after benefiting from an inspired front-running ride from Johnny Murtagh at Epsom where she ran on gamely to beat Wonder Of Wonders by three parts of a length. However, Willie Haggas’ charge still needs to be supplemented for next Sunday’s race, and the bookmakers certainly don’t expect her to confirm the placings with Wonder Of Wonders, with the latter a short-priced favourite across the board to exact revenge at The Curragh.

Seven horses since ’88 were beaten at Epsom prior to landing the Irish equivalent, while during the same period eight winners of this Classic did not run in the English Oaks. Personally, I have my doubts as to whether Dancing Rain will again come out on top, though I feel that Wonder Of Wonders is simply too short at around the 6/4 mark. Don’t get me wrong, her effort at Epsom was excellent, and this more conventional track may well enable her to get the better of Dancing Rain this time, but her odds are not commensurate with her chance – she’s no 6-4 shot!

I am still unsure whether Blue Bunting stays a mile and a half following her effort in the Investec Oaks on the other side of the Irish Sea. She looked a filly of potentially star quality when landing the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket, and there is plenty of stamina in her pedigree. It could be that she was simply not suited by the unique gradients at Epsom, and if that’s the case she could easily finish in front of both Dancing Rain and Wonder Of Wonders this time.

Laughing Lashes
However, I am tempted by the standout 14-1 on offer with Ladbrokes about Laughing Lashes, who proved her effort in the English 1,000 all wrong when a staying-on third to Misty For Me in the Irish version at this track in May, in the process shaping as though a stiffer test of stamina would be very much in her favour, despite the mixed messages her pedigree sends out with regard to the likelihood of her staying a mile and a half.

I am pretty confident the Oaks trip will be within her compass. The daughter of Mr Greeley travels well in her races, and possesses a willing attitude, always sticking to her task in determined fashion. Indeed, her below par effort at Newmarket on her seasonal reappearance was the only occasion in six starts that she’s finished out of the first three. She’s fresher than some of these rivals, too, particularly her conqueror in the Irish 1,000, Misty For Me, who has raced twice again since.

Misty For Me was mightily impressive in the Pretty Polly, but has yet to conclusively prove she stays 12 furlongs, while there is a chance that she was flattered by the margin of her victory over Midday, as the latter surely didn’t run her race. Havant is worth another chance, particularly if the ground eases, but as things stand it’s Blue Bunting and Laughing Lashes that interest me most, and the latter is too good a price to overlook, so she earns the vote.

Recommendation: LAUGHING LASHES
