Right on Target for Repeat Scottish National Bid
08/12/11

John Wade's talented staying chaser Always Right looks set to be campaigned this term with a repeat assault on the Coral Scottish Grand National as his main objective after putting up a fine performance on his seasonal reappearance to win in impressive fashion at Kelso on Sunday over a trip considered to be some way short of his best, writes Elliot Slater.

The nine-year-old was winning at the picturesque Scottish borders track for the third time from four visits having landed a hunter chase in March 2010 and a handicap in February last year when he first began his rapid rise to prominence on the staying chasing scene with an eight-length defeat of Camden George. Raised 12lbs to a mark of 130 after that win earlier in the year Always Right then justified favouritism in the three-and-a-quarter-mile Grimthorpe Handicap Chase at Doncaster a month later, beating Lothian Falcon by a head in a tremendous battle to the line. Anyone who had placed a horse racing bet on him would have been very pleased.

A further 12lbs rise took his rating to 142 and the gelded son of Right Win then took his chance at Ayr in April in the Scottish National and ran an absolute blinder over the four-mile trip, finishing a close third (beaten only a length) behind Beshabar and Merigo in a race that will live long in the memory.

Racing prominently at Kelso at the weekend in order to ensure the two-and-three-quarter-mile event didn't turn into a speed test, Always Right looked to have a serious battle on his hands when the useful Skippers Brig loomed up going well at the fourth from home, but Wade's charge kicked again and eventually outstayed his rival to score by just under three-lengths and demonstrate that he remains on an upward curve and will be a force to be reckoned with wherever he goes next.
