Walsh Confirmed Aboard Kauto Star in King George
14/12/11

It was always going to be hard for Ruby Walsh to desert his long-standing championship race winner Kauto Star, and following the news that the veteran will take his chance in the Grade 1 King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day Walsh was quick to be confirmed as the man on board in preference to the four-time race winner's illustrious stable companion Master Minded, writes Elliot Slater.

Ruby Walsh& Kauto Star

Following his tumultuous seasonal return when stunning his critics to easily get the better of the outstanding Long Run in the Betfair Chase at Haydock last month, there has been a public clamour to see the old horse have one more crack at the horse who comprehensively beat him last term in both the King George and the Cheltenham Gold Cup but who got only a rear view of Paul Nicholls' great chaser in the Lancashire race that will go down as one of the best training performances in recent times. Those looking at the Kempton Park betting should bear this in mind.

Walsh was overwhelmed by the reception that both he and Kauto Star received in the hallowed Haydock winners enclosure, and having partnered the Clive Smith-owned 11-year-old to victory in no less than a remarkable 14 Grade 1 races, Walsh was always likely to side with his old pal ahead of Master Minded, another with whom he has enjoyed so many outstanding victories, including in two Queen Mother Champion Chases.

The combination of Walsh and Kauto star was always going to result in market support and the veteran has been cut to a best priced 9/2 in the top horse racing betting prices to win back the race he made his own from 2007-2010. Long Run (6/4), certain to be much fitter than he was last month, will be a formidable opponent, whilst Master Minded (5/1), trying three-miles for the first time in his amazing career and set to be partnered by Daryl Jacob, is very much the dark horse in what is shaping up to be a race to savour.
