Sole Power Shoots Down Budapest Bullet in Temple Stakes

Sole Power bounced back to his best form to land the betfred.com Temple Stakes at Haydock as the 'Budapest Bullet' Overdose failed to fire.

Keagan Latham was always travelling comfortably in mid-division on Eddie Lynam's Nunthorpe Stakes winner and pounced in the final half a furlong.

Kingsgate Native
The 8-1 shot won by three-quarters of a length from last year's winner Kingsgate Native, with Prohibit third as early leaders Hamish McGonagall, Overdose and Tangerine Trees faded away.

Latham said: "They went very quick early on. I got a slight knock out of the gates, but I wasn't too worried. They went hard and that worked in our favour. He picked up very nicely."

Lynam added: "Anyone who thought he fluked the Nunthorpe can think again. There were the winners of the last four Nunthorpes in that race today and luckily it was our turn, which is the way with sprinters.

"Keagan gave him a lovely ride and I'm delighted the horse has shown the doubters. Henry Candy's horse (Markab) had a 7lb penalty and we didn't - that helped.

"We are aware of that and he won't run in Ireland this year as horses carry their penalties for about two years. He'll go to the posh place (Royal Ascot) for the King's Stand, but the race we want to win again is the Nunthorpe. We want to go back."

Overdose's rider Andreas Suborics said: "He really needs softer ground. After halfway I felt his legs tire and tire - I didn't feel the horse kick like he usually does.

"He deserves another chance to show the public he is a really good sprinter on softer ground. At halfway I was worried as his action was getting higher and higher.

"It is not the horse's fault as he has had problems - but he has not been able to show his best today. He stumbled out of the gate but he was soon going fast. He just didn't kick."
