Captain's Blog - 4th October 2011

I came back to earth with a massive thump yesterday as the blog selection trailed in well beaten at Pontefract. The good run could not continue I suppose and it is good for the soul to get a kick up the backside now and then; at least that is what my Dad would tell me after giving me a clip round the ear!

I remember on one occasion receiving such a whack from him and I asked him, "What was that for?"

"Nothing", he replied, "That was just in case you do something." A pre-emptive strike if ever I saw one!

A day in the studio for me today helping out with the coverage from Catterick where Peter Naughton will be fronting our coverage. I will be cycling to work as I will be able to get back on the road this afternoon before it gets too dark therefore improving my chances of survival. I should not be so negative, really, but there have already been a couple of times when my life has flashed before me on a bike and if I can minimise the possibility of that happening again then that is the way to go as far as I am concerned.

Paul Hanagan

Paul Hanagan is understandably the firm favourite for the jockeys' championship but, with Kieran Fallon showing real intent to chase him down and Silvestre De Sousa banging in a four timer yesterday, the race is not over just yet. I think Hanagan will hang on, to the delight of his supporters, but it may be a lot closer than it promised to be a few weeks ago. It would be some achievement for Hanagan to win it two years on the bounce and testament to the strength in depth of the Fahey yard, who have given the majority of his winners.

There is plenty of superb action on Racing UK this week and in particular I would like to point you towards the excellent two day meeting at York on Friday and Saturday. If you can join us I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Time to get the bike tyres pumped up.

All the best.
