Lucky Thirteen Line Up for Coronation Stakes
16/06/11

Thursday of the Royal Meeting may traditionally be known as Ladies’ Day but it is the turn of the blueblooded three-year-old fillies to shine on Friday in the feature race of the day, the Group 1 Coronation Stakes.

Thirteen runners have been declared, including two winners at last year’s meeting, Memory, who landed the Albany Stakes, and Queen Mary Stakes winner Maqaasid.

They are joined by the Aidan O’Brien-trained Together, boasting perhaps the smartest form of the season to date, having been runner-up in both the Qipco 1000 Guineas and Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Barefoot Lady won the Nell Gwyn Stakes before finishing fifth in the 1000 Guineas and runner-up in the Musidora Stakes at York, while another of this year’s star performers is French raider Immortal Verse, who won the Group 2 Prix de Sandrigham at Chantilly on June 5.

Another French challenger is Nova Hawk, who was fourth in both the 1000 Guineas and Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, but she has not had the longest trip to get here as that honour goes to the American-trained More Than Real, winner last year of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf.

Princess Haya’s Joviality has been progressive this season, finishing runner-up in a conditions race at Sandown before winning the Musidora Stakes at York, the scene of Theyskens’ Theory’s sole victory this year. The Brian Meehan-trained filly win the Listed Micheal Seeley Memorial Stakes on her only start of the season.

Jim Bolger sent out Lush Lashes to win the Coronation Stakes in 2008 and this year he fields Claiomh Solais, whose busy season has included a fourth-place finish in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Cheveley Park Stud have also enjoyed success in the Coronation Stakes - winning the race with Exclusive (1998), Russian Rhythm (2003) and Nannina (2006) - and this year’s homebred contender is Clinical, who was third in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes on Oaks day at Epsom.

The Andrew Balding-trained I Love Me and Elshabakiya from the Clive Brittain stable complete a competitive line-up.
