Best Picks for the 2020 Kentucky Derby: Top 10 Contenders for Roses' Stint

horse race

After an unorthodox and extended summer, the Kentucky Derby is heading to its final destination on September 5, 2020. With the significant Derby-prep races all successfully written on the books, there is no turning back. The big favourites have intensified their odds, and the Churchill Downs is now taking its shape.

While the Run For The Roses is just a few days from now, the odds ranking continuously changes until today. Although there are horses who still maintained their rank in the Derby trail, some discontinued the Kentucky Derby quest, while others are withdrawing their bids.

Hence, as the odds ranking continues to get tighter, the Kentucky Derby competition also comes tougher. To excite you more as you witness and bet for the Derby, let's see the current leaderboard in 2020 Kentucky Derby expert picks of the strongest hopefuls saddling up this September.

Tiz The Law

If you are looking for a horse with the most impressive resume in today's Derby trail since Arazi in 1992, Tiz The Law is the name to call out. With a dominating win in the Travers Stakes a few weeks ago, Tiz is now going a 4-4 record win streak.

That said, he is the biggest favourite for the Kentucky Derby, with eye-popping odds to look forward to. Can his win streak continue in the Derby, or will it be his biggest upset?

Art Collector

After his debut stint in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes last July, Art Collector did his homework at Ellis Park. As a son of Bernardini, he didn't disappoint his trainer, Thomas Drury, Jr., by winning the Runhappy Derby impressively. Today, he is taking the second spot for the Derby leaderboard and the closest contender of Tiz The Law.

Honor A.P.

Completing at least five racing starts since his birth, Honor A.P. is taking the third spot for the favourite horses to wrestle at Churchill Downs this September. He did a great job redeeming himself in the Santa Anita Derby, garnering the title after placing second in the San Felipe Stakes. Earlier this August, he dazzled in the Shared Belief Stakes and ended as a runner-up.

Ny Traffic

A horse that comes with a long list of achievements as his weapon to come out stronger in the Derby is Ny Traffic. Although he did not get any title in the stakes races he joined, he ended great placements as a runner-up running against other Derby contenders. Some of Ny Traffic's achievements were in the Risen Star Stakes, Haskell Stakes, Louisiana Derby, and Matt Winn Stakes.

King Guillermo

The unique placement of the Derby today has brought a lot of surprises to the horse racing community, and King Guillermo is no exception. After several months of getting laid off since his last competition in March, King Guillermo had burst on the scene in the Tampa Bay Derby last March and won the competition. Last May, he also competed in the Arkansas Derby and won second-place.

Dr Post

After a month of placing third in the Belmont Stakes, Dr Post has not joined any race, which declined his odds ranking. His trainer, Todd Pletcher, has not gone anywhere and sent this horse to participate in the Haskell Stakes. Although he hasn't started the race well, he managed to maintain his speed and settled in third place.

Thousand Words

Knowing that Bob Baffert has been a superstar trainer in the Derby, his horse, Thousand Words, was one of the colts who earned popularity right away in the prep season. After winning the Robert B.  Lewis Stakes, his odds were too high. However, he started falling apart when he got upset at Oaklawn Stakes, where he settled in 11th place.

Authentic

Authentic is going to be Thousand Words’ stablemate in the upcoming Derby since they are both trained by Bob Baffert. He is also one of the colts who accomplished an excellent horse racing form. Looking into his achievements, Authentic recently won the Haskell Stakes, following his victories in the Sham Stakes (1st), Santa Anita Derby (2nd), and San Felipe Stakes (1st).

Caracaro

With many racehorses hoping to inch their ranking as the Derby comes closer, Caracaro has made it to the list. He is one of the youngest colts who will joust in the Run For The Roses and complete late prep races to boost his odds. His second placements in the Peter Pan Stakes and Travers Stakes is why he settled at the ninth spot today.

Max Player

Max Player has almost the same fate as Caracaro as they vie for a slot in today's Derby rankings. They dazzled well in the late games after he got third place in the Belmont Stakes. He ran in the Travers Stakes and won third place.

Takeaway

There is no turning back in a few more days as the most powerful colts will saddle up in the Kentucky Derby. The horses who did well in the prep season will have their greatest test to show fans how well they can work out on the dirt track.

With the top ten horses above who completed the power rankings, can Tiz The Law maintain his undefeated streak, or will the other nine colts deserve the garland of roses? We'll find out soon.
