Wolf Of Windlesham produced a minor upset in the JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham this afternoon when running out the half length winner of the extended two mile event.

The 12/1 shot was always travelling sweetly under jockey Josh Moore and took up the running turning for home after he passed long-time leader and 5/6 favourite Romain De Senam. The three-year-old had to dig deep to repel the challenge of 25/1 runner-up Coo Star Sivola as they battled up the hill but he responded gamely to give trainer Stuart Edmunds his first winner at Cheltenham.

Edmunds, who took over from former trainer Renee Robeson following her death in January, was visibly delighted after the race.

"He's shows plenty at home," said Edmunds.

"To be fair, I'd have gone to Ludlow on Thursday if it had been up to me but the owner (Michael Lawrence) wanted to come here so it was a bold move from him and fair dos.

"We'll see what happens from here. Obviously, he's coped well with Cheltenham which has to be a bonus if we're thinking about The Festival. We're over the moon really - it's amazing. I think it's my first runner here.

"He wasn't a world beater on the Flat but he's obviously left that well behind. They put blinkers on him on the Flat and all sorts but he seems to love his jumping. I say that but he was a bit green at his hurdles. He made a mistake down the back but Josh let him recover and he went on from there. He stays and he came up the hill well. If anything, in future Josh said he would hold on to him a bit longer.

"He was exposed of a mark of 60 on the level and I ran him a couple of times on the Flat and couldn't get anywhere near the front with him. We're only a small stable and we've only got 15 horses. I worked with Renee (Robeson) for 30 years - ever since I left school - so I've been there a long time. She was an amazing lady and it was very sad. Things have to carry on though - we're always looking for more horses. Mr Robeson is still there keeping an eye on us all and all the staff have remained as well so it's very much business as usual."
