Ebor Festival build-up: Ombudsman and Constitution River on collision course at York

York’s four-day showpiece returns on 19 August, with the Juddmonte International shaping up as the race of the summer
The countdown to York’s Ebor Festival is under way, and the meeting that runs from Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 August is building towards one contest above all. The Juddmonte International on the opening day looks set to deliver a clash of the generations, with last year’s winner Ombudsman poised to take on the outstanding three-year-old Constitution River.
The credentials on both sides are serious. Ombudsman, rated among the very best horses in the world, was dominant in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and heads back to defend his crown. Constitution River, trained by Aidan O’Brien, has been flawless this season, following his Prix du Jockey Club success by thumping his elders in the Coral-Eclipse. Andrew Balding’s Item, a dual winner at the track this year, looks the chief danger, with Delacroix among others in the mix.
There is far more to the week than the opener. The Great Voltigeur on day one doubles as a St Leger trial, the Yorkshire Oaks headlines Ladies’ Day, the Nunthorpe provides day three’s sprinting spectacle, and the meeting closes with the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap, the richest Flat handicap in Britain, alongside the Group 1 City of York Stakes. Across four days there are four Group 1s and some £7.5 million in prize money on offer.
Early ante-post talk is already swirling around the supporting features, from an American challenge in the Nunthorpe to a competitive Ebor Handicap, and the picture will sharpen as final declarations approach.
